What is heart failure?
Heart failure (HF) is when the heart struggles to pump oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. Symptoms include tiredness, shortness of breath, and fluid buildup in the lungs, feet, and other areas of the body.
Why is this study being done?
People with HF are at risk for other serious medical problems. The goal of COMET-HF is to find out if a study medicine can lower the risk for HF-related events like hospitalization for HF, in people who have HF with a low ejection fraction. A low ejection fraction means the heart isn’t pumping out as much blood as it should with each beat.
You may be a good fit for this study if you
- Are an adult being treated for HF
- Have a low ejection fraction
- Have had a HF event like an urgent care visit, emergency room visit, or hospitalization for new or worsening HF symptoms in the past 6 months

How long is this study?
This study is expected to last about 3 years. COMET-HF will end after at least 850 strokes or HF-related events, like hospitalization for HF, happen across the entire group of steady participants. Your study doctor will explain the length of your participation during the first study visit.
What can I expect if I decide to join?
- Talk with your doctor about your current medications
- Have in-person and video or phone call study visits
- Take the study medicine or the placebo by mouth 2 times a day
- Answer questions about your daily activities, symptoms, and quality of life
