A Season to Thrive: Winter Well-Being

During the cold winter months, it can be challenging to stay healthy. Be proactive about your well-being with these tips to thrive in the winter.

Boost Your Immune System

With winter comes illnesses. Colds, the flu and COVID-19 are just a few of the sicknesses that surge during the season. We all know washing our hands is essential to limiting the spread of germs, but there are also ways to bolster your immune system and reduce your chances of getting sick.

Eat a nutrient-rich diet. A balanced diet fosters a healthy immune system. Fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins that fortify immunity, such as vitamin C and zinc. If you are unable to meet nutrition standards through your diet, consult with your doctor about taking supplements.

Get enough sleep. Studies have shown that adults need seven to nine hours of quality sleep every night to support a healthy immune system. Individuals who regularly get less than seven hours of sleep a night are three times more likely to catch the common cold. Ensure you are getting quality sleep with a dark, cool, quiet and comfy sleep environment.

Consider vaccinations. The flu and COVID-19 vaccinations are your best defense against catching these viruses. Talk with your doctor to see if vaccinations are right for you.

Stay Active

The cold weather makes it tempting to spend your extra time cozied up inside. However, physical activity is a proven way to improve mental and physical health. Some ways to stay active during the winter include:

If the weather isn’t the best for outdoor activities, take the opportunity to workout indoors. Going to the gym, working out on home exercise equipment such as an elliptical or treadmill, or following online workout videos at home are just a few ways you can remain active without going outside.

Prioritize Your Mental Health

Mental health is just as important as physical health. With the holidays, this season may cause increased levels of stress. If you find yourself struggling, there are ways to promote your mental well-being.

Practice self-care. Ensure you leave time to focus on yourself. This means allowing yourself the luxury of stepping away from daily responsibilities and stresses to recharge and rejuvenate. Engaging in your hobbies and other activities that make you feel good is a great way to improve your well-being.

Don’t isolate yourself. Everyone needs alone time but too much time by yourself could be detrimental. Spending time with your loved ones is vital for emotional well-being. Outside of being fun, connecting with loved ones cultivates a support system you can lean on if needed.
