Facts to Know about Breast Cancer
While it’s important to know the basics – from MRIs to self-exams – there are some surprising insights that might not be on your radar.
Here are five facts you should be aware of! They might just change the way you think about breast cancer and how you approach your health.
Technology is changing the game
MRIs have the highest sensitivity for detecting tumors that mammograms might miss. MRIs are used for breast screenings and diagnostics and are recommended for women with a high risk of breast cancer in addition to 3D mammograms. It’s a good idea to stay updated on these advancements and talk to your healthcare provider about what kinds of tests and exams are right for you.
Family history isn’t the WHOLE story
Having a family history of breast cancer can increase your risk. However, most women who get breast cancer don’t have a family history of it at all. Factor in other elements such as personal health, age and lifestyle choices. Make sure to participate in regular screenings and be aware of your personal risks.
Breast cancer can affect different parts of the breast.
Breast cancer does not always start in the same spot. Most people have heard of invasive ductal carcinoma, where the cancer starts in the milk ducts, but did you know it can also start in the lobules where milk is produced? It can also even start in the connective tissue. Being aware of where your cancer originates in the breast can help you determine the best treatment option.
Breast cancer awareness isn’t just for women
Think breast cancer is only a woman’s issue? Think again. Men can get breast cancer too, though it’s less common. Everyone – family, friends and community – has a role in supporting those affected. Spreading awareness is vital for women AND men alike!
What you eat makes a difference
Your diet impacts your risk for breast cancer. Studies suggest foods such as fruits, veggies and whole grains lower your risk. Avoid processed foods when you can and indulge in ingredients packed with antioxidants, like berries and nuts.
