Keep Summer Safe and Fun for Everyone
As the weather warms up and we dive into summer activities, it’s the perfect time to share some essential tips to keep you and your loved ones safe. Whether you’re planning outdoor adventures, enjoying backyard barbecues, or simply soaking up the sun, these safety tips will help ensure a fun and safe summer.
Firework Safety – If you plan to celebrate with fireworks, be sure to follow safety instructions, keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby to douse used fireworks and never allow young children to handle fireworks. Even a sparkler burns at 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. Consider attending a professional fireworks show for a safer experience.
Practice Water Safety – Whether you’re at the pool, beach, or lake, be prepared for water safety. Always supervise children around water, regardless of their swimming abilities. Enroll kids in swimming lessons if possible and ensure they wear appropriate flotation devices. Avoid swimming alone and be mindful of water currents and weather conditions.
Grill Safely – Barbecues are a summer staple, but it’s important to handle grills with care. Place grills on a stable, flat surface away from your home, deck railings, and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from grills, and never leave a lit grill unattended. Always have a fire extinguisher nearby, and ensure the grill is completely cool before moving or cleaning it.
Stay Hydrated – Summer heat can lead to dehydration quickly, especially when you’re active outdoors. Make sure to drink plenty of cool water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Keep a water bottle handy and encourage children to take regular hydration breaks.
Stay Cool – Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious risks during the hot summer months. Dress in lightweight, breathable clothing, hydrate with cold beverages, and try to stay in the shade or indoors during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). If you feel dizzy, weak, or nauseous, seek a cool environment and hydrate immediately.
Protect Your Skin – Sun protection is crucial to prevent sunburns and long-term skin damage. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and use sunglasses to shield your eyes from harmful UV rays. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours, and after swimming or sweating.
Be Mindful of Insects – Summer is prime time for insects like mosquitoes and ticks, which can carry diseases. Use insect repellent containing DEET or other effective ingredients, and wear long sleeves and pants in wooded or grassy areas. Check for ticks after spending time outdoors and remove them promptly with tweezers.
First Aid Preparedness – Accidents can happen, so it’s wise to have a well-stocked first aid kit on hand. Include essentials like bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary medications. Familiarize yourself with basic first aid procedures to handle minor injuries.
By following these summer safety tips, you can enjoy all the wonderful activities this season has to offer while keeping yourself and your loved ones safe. If you do have a mishap, seek appropriate medical care. For emergencies, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency center. For non-life-threatening injuries, contact your doctor or visit OSU Family Medicine – Harvard clinic for walk-in urgent care services.
