Katie Mettler, D.O.: My Passion for Surgery and Commitment to Patients
I am thrilled to be joining the incredible group of surgeons with OSU Surgery. My goal is to ensure that every patient feels comfortable, informed, and confident throughout their surgical journey.
Early Passion Translates to the Operating Room
Growing up, I spent countless hours helping my dad work on cars and projects around the house. This is where I developed a love for hands-on problem solving. This translated seamlessly into a medical career where I now use my skills to tangibly improve patients’ lives through surgery. After earning my medical degree from Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa, I completed my General Surgery residency at OSU Medical Center and am now excited to embark on a promising career with OSU Surgery.
Expertise and Innovations in Minimally Invasive Surgery
I have a particular passion for abdominal wall hernia repair and am a proud member of the American Hernia Society. My specialization in minimally invasive surgery, particularly the use of cutting-edge robotic technology, allows me to perform more precise surgeries, resulting in quicker recovery times and less post-operative discomfort for patients.
Additionally, I am trained in fluorescence technology, a groundbreaking technique with numerous applications in modern surgery. This technology helps assess blood flow during colon surgery, visualize bile duct anatomy, and identify parathyroid adenomas, among other uses. My commitment to utilizing the latest advancements ensures that my patients receive the highest standard of care.
A Commitment to Patient-Centered Care
I believe in a collaborative approach to healthcare, where patients are active participants in their treatment plans. I understand that the prospect of surgery can be daunting, so I am dedicated to making the process as transparent and comfortable as possible. Open communication is a cornerstone of my practice, and I encourage my patients to ask questions and share any concerns they may have.
Why I Chose OSU Medicine
Joining OSU Medicine was a natural choice for me. I was drawn to the exciting growth and innovation within the hospital and healthcare system, as well as the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology. Additionally, I have a deep-rooted connection to the area—I moved to Oklahoma from Colorado to help care for my grandmother who was battling pancreatic cancer, and it was here that I met my husband, Jeff. The kindness and community spirit of Oklahoma left a lasting impression, turning this state into my home.
Beyond the Operating Room
Outside of my professional life, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Jeff, and our two dogs, Sadie and Joey. We share a love for outdoor adventures like fly fishing, hiking, and camping. Interestingly, I also have a past filled with adrenaline—I have skydived approximately 70 times during medical school! While I no longer skydive, I cherish the thrill and excitement of those experiences.
I live by the quote, “Who you are is defined by what you are willing to struggle through,” by Mark Manson. This philosophy of hard work and perseverance is evident in both my personal and professional life.
A Personal Invitation
I am excited to meet the patients and families I will be serving at OSU Surgery. I look forward to building lasting relationships and providing care that is compassionate, innovative, and patient-centered. Whether you’re facing a routine procedure or something more complex, my goal is to treat every patient as if they are my own family member.
